SLOUCHYzipper Add On!
Following the release of the SLOUCHYshopper it became clear that a lot of people, while thrilled with the simple accessibility of the pattern, would love an option for a zipped closure. Time for a bit of hacking!
It was always the intention that the SLOUCHYshopper be a straightforward beginner pattern, perfect as an introduction to bag making. I had planned on having a sewalong, to support those who love a video or who need that extra bit of help as they work their way through the pattern, along with bringing a bit of fun to the sewing community! So when beautiful zipped versions of the pattern began to appear on social media I thought the sewalong would provide a great opportunity to create a SLOUCHYzipper Add On and include it in the sewalong video!
The sewalong video is recorded and I am well into the editing process. In advance of getting myself fully organised, I have just uploaded a FREE SLOUCHYzipper Add On listing to the website! The listing includes a PDF tutorial on how to add a zipper to the main compartment of the SLOUCHYshopper along with A4/Letter pattern files to print off the extra couple of pattern pieces. The sewalong video covers the integration of the zipper into the SLOUCHYshopper sewing process!
When is the Sewalong?
I'm hoping to launch the videos next week along with having a bit of fun with giveaways and live chats, so I will keep you all posted. It's proving difficult to make a plan in relation to the timing with the gang off school at the moment but I am getting there, slowly but surely! While I’m progressing with the editing of the sewalong video, the SLOUCHYzipper Add On tutorial is there for you to download, have a look through and get your hands on the extra notions needed.
Speaking of extra notions… along with the original SLOUCHYshopper pattern (available here) and associated fabric and notions, you will also need the following extras:
Pattern Pieces: Zip Attachment Strips (J): 2x Outer Fabric and 2x Lining Fabric, Zipper Tab (K): 1x Outer Fabric
Zipper: You will need either a No. 5 fixed length, closed ended zipper, or a continuous zipper tape and zipper pull in the following minimum lengths:
Fixed length, closed ended zipper: Medium: 45cm (18"), Large: 55cm (22") or
Continuous zipper: Medium: 47cm (19"), Large: 57cm (23")
About the SLOUCHYshopper Pattern:
The SLOUCHYshopper pattern comes in two sizes, medium and large. The large size is a traditionally big shopper, perfect for carrying about all you need for a trip to the beach, swimming lessons, the supermarket... The medium size still has lots of room but might be a better size for day to day use?
Both sizes of the SLOUCHYshopper have one main bag compartment with a nifty hanging slip pocket and lanyard strap and clip internally. Both medium and large can be made with a choice of a detachable shoulder strap or an adjustable shoulder strap, along with in seam hand straps.
Skill Level? The SLOUCHYshopper is a "Beginner” level pattern. The bag construction is very straightforward, but with some lovely details to keep it fun! It is a great introductory bag-making pattern, perfect for beginner bag makers and suitable for making on a domestic sewing machine!
Thanks for your patience in reading this far, and for waiting for the SLOUCHYsewalong videos! I can’t wait to get them finished, uploaded and let the sewalong fun begin!
xx Sarah
