The SMALL size requires up to 50cm (3/4yrd) of 110cm/42" wide lining fabric.

MESH FABRIC: You may wish to use small amounts of mesh fabric for the bottle pockets and/or internal elasticated pocket.

  • NOTIONS required include (depending on your option choice):

    - Main Zipper: For the main opening you will need a closed ended, preferably, though not essential, double-pull zipper, in one of the following lengths: STANDARD: 61cm (24"), SMALL: 46cm (18"). You can of course use a continuous coil zipper; just allow about 3cm - 4cm (1 1/4" - 1 5/8") longer zipper length than the sizes above. Both a #5 or #3 sized zipper are suitable.

    - (Optional) Front Hidden Zipper: For the vertical hidden zipper to the front pocket you will need a closed ended zip, ideally a #3 sized zipper, in one of the following lengths: STANDARD: 20cm (8"), SMALL: 15cm (6"). You can of course use a continuous coil zipper; just allow about 3cm (1 1/4") longer zipper length than the sizes above. Ideally a #3 sized zipper.

    - Bias Binding: Ready-made or self-made bias binding to finish the internal seams. STANDARD: 2.3m (2 1/2 yards), SMALL: 2m (2 1/4 yards

    - (Optional) Piping: Ready-made piping or piping cord plus self-made bias binding to make your own. STANDARD: 2.3m (2 1/2 yards), SMALL: 2m (2 1/4 yards)

    - (Optional) Elastic: For the Bottle Pocket externally and the Elasticated Pocket internally. Allowing a bit extra for ease of construction, you will need approximately: Bottle Pocket: 6mm - 12mm (1/4" - 1/2") wide elastic: STANDARD/SMALL: 25cm (9 3/4"). Internal Elasticated Pocket: 6mm - 12mm (1/4" - 1/2") wide elastic: STANDARD: 48cm (19"), SMALL: 40cm (16").

    - Hand & Backpack Straps & Hardware: 25mm (1") wide webbing: STANDARD: 4m (4 1/2 yrds) which includes: 2x 72cm (28 1/2") for the hand straps, 2x 115cm (40") for the backpack straps and 2x 10cm (4") for the strap connector pieces. SMALL: 3.75m (4 yrds) which includes: 2 x 60cm (23 1/2") for the hand straps, 2x 115cm (40") for the backpack straps and 2x 10cm (4") for the strap connector pieces. 2x 25mm (1") D-rings & 2x 25mm (1") adjustable sliders

    - (Optional) Piping: Ready made piping or piping cord plus self made bias binding to make your own. Allowing a bit extra for ease of construction, you will need approximately: STANDARD: 2.3m (2 1/2 yards), SMALL: 2m (2 1/4 yards)

    - Interfacing: The SplashOUT Backpack can be made without overall interfacing depending on the fabric you use and the level or structure that you desire. However for most fabrics (though perhaps not the heaviest canvases) it is recommended to reinforce all main outer fabrics with a good quality mid/light weight interfacing such as Pellon SF101 Shape Flex or Vilene G700. This adds extra strength and stability to the fabric without adding excessive bulk, which could make the bag unwieldy in construction.

The pattern tutorial contains further suggestions on areas where you may want to consider adding extra padded or lofted interfacing.

    - Needle suitable for your fabric choice.
